George C. Dobson "Matchless", SN 474.
No tone ring, skin head rests on wood.
About 1/2 of the hooks & nuts appear to be original, the rest are salvaged, period-authentic hooks & nuts, very close to the originals in appearance.

DIMENSIONS:

Head dia. = 11"

Scale length 25 3/8"

String span @ nut = 1  1/8"

String span @ heel = 1  5/8".

Bridge =  5/8"

action @ heel  = 3/16"

FLAWS:

Small gouge in back of peghead by tuner #2
Normal scuffing due to age.  Overall the finish is in very good condition.

See the note above about the hooks and nuts.

Uses violin-type pegs....not really a flaw, but takes some getting used to if you've never used them.  These are less precise than geared tuners, and take more attention than geared tuners.  The banjo stays in tune.

ON THE PLUS SIDE:

Very nice tone, very good playability.  I like the simple, "paddle" pegheads.

Sound clip:

Spotted pony
