The original finish on this
banjo is in pretty nice shape, and the pot is exceptionally clean.
No maker's mark, but the
peghead identifies it as Lyon & Healy.
Tailpiece
is a brass
replica of a vintage J. E. Dallas tailpiece. Shoes, hooks and nuts
all appear to be original.
The action was too high, so I
added a brass cage with a poplar strip to adjust the dowel & neck to
lower the action.
3/16 in deep brass-floored frailing scoop
just below fret #14.
Right now the head is fairly
slack and the action is a little bit low. If desired, the action
could be raised a few 1/16's
by tightening the head.
DIMENSIONS:
Head dia. = 11 in.,
20 hooks.
Scale length 24 7/8
in.
String span @ nut=1
in
String span @ heel
= 1 1/2 in.
Bridge =
3/4 in. tall
SETUP:
* action @ scoop
= 5/16 in.
* action @ octave =
1/8 in.
FLAWS:
Not really a flaw but a
repair.... the brass cage to adjust the neck angle and action.
Normal scuffing due to age.
Overall finish is pretty good, a little worn @ the left hand position.
ON THE PLUS SIDE:
Good, bright sound, nice
playability. I left the action a little low because I like how it
sounds.... may buzz a little if played hard.
